Honey Blog #3

Dear Honey Lovers,
Well, it has been a hectic few weeks!
With all the great weather we had at the end of June going into July, the nectar was flowing and it was a race to get enough supers onto the hives for all the honey our bees were producing.
However, the lovely spring and hot summer has also produced an EXPLOSION in the number of wasps around. In the last couple of weeks it has been a constant battle to help the bees defend their hives from wasps trying to rob the honey. A weaker hive with stores built up over months can be taken over and destroyed within a few hours.
We reduced the entrance space to the hives (so the bees have a smaller entrance to defend from intruders), put out wasp traps, and even moved smaller colonies. Even so, the wasps were relentless, and we lost one hive.
It’s never a good day when you lose a hive, but there is some comfort that it was only the one. At the end of the day, Nature’s in charge and what will be will bee!
Overall though, we got the good season weatherwise that all beekeepers pray for. There were a few points at the end of June, early July where it was so hot that a lot of the flowers the bees would forage had been burned off, so this might impact the harvest. But we will still have what I would say is a good amount of honey and—from first impressions—top quality which, when ready, will be available to our loyal (and new!) customers.
In the next couple of weeks we will start putting on the clearer boards and bringing in the supers that are full of honey. We’ll begin the hard work of extracting and jarring the summer’s honey which is probably the most satisfying part of the year.
Once that is done, we will do our treatments for varroa to make sure the bees stay strong and survive over winter, that they have enough food going into winter, and generally begin our winter preparations.
Until then, we’re excited to get everything jarred up and out to customers and our stockists and continue supplying this beautiful Naked Nectar honey! Order soon!
